When harvested young (about 3-inches in length) the beans along with pod or outer casing and its young leaves are edible! My neighbors' kid loves to eat the beans raw and according to Healthline, benefits include: Promote Bone Health, Improve High Blood Pressure and more!
Do be careful, if you are susceptible to immune allergic reaction, please consult with a medical expert before trying raw or cooked!
Through its roots, the plants inject nitrogen into the soil. Simply push the seeds in the ground (6-12 inches apart) after fall harvest. Water generously once and leave them alone! The seedlings will push out in winter and ready by Spring.
I usually cut back down to the ground a few of the plants, hand till them in place and cover with compost. The rest get to live its entire lifecycle producing flowers that hummingbirds just love to visit. When the flower set fruit or teh pods, I harvest the beans sometimes two or three times! When spent, I cut the plant from the base (leaving the roots!) and feed the roughage to the goats or chickens. Everybody wins!
